My Go-To Supplements

When it comes to supplements I take a very bio-individual approach and only incorporate them once my clients are being supported on a foundational level. Meaning each person has very different needs and shouldn’t blindly supplement especially things like single minerals such as zinc. And before you tell me all the immune benefits of zinc, the reason I don’t recommend this to clients is 1) because minerals can either work synergistically (with) or antagonistically (against) one another. In the case of zinc, supplementing with extra zinc leads to a decrease in the body’s ability to absorb copper which is necessary for red blood cell production, decreasing inflammation and moves iron appropriately in the body. It is also necessary in running almost every enzyme within the body. To sum it up, copper is VERY important. And so is zinc however 2) the body is able to utilize whole food forms of vitamins and minerals better than synthetic so yet another reason why I don’t typically recommend traditional vitamins whether they are multi or single. The exception to this is magnesium (I will explain below).

Though most supplementation is bio-individual, this list contains supplements I would recommend to most people looking to support overall function and predominantly hormone balance.

1: Beef Liver Capsules

I know what you’re probably thinking… that sounds disgusting. Well the capsules make it a lot easier to stomach. Beef liver is what I like to call Nature’s Multivitamin. If you’re looking for something simple yet most impactful, beef liver is for you. It’s packed with naturally occurring nutrients to support numerous areas of health such as hormones, metabolism, hair, skin and nail integrity, fertility and immune. I mentioned synthetic vitamins above but the reason why this is a better alternative and one our bodies would naturally prefer is because it contains the proper ratios of essential vitamins and minerals. These are vitamins A,D,E and K, folate, zinc, copper, CoQ10, choline, iron and more. Another reason I am a huge fan is because of another saying we have in the wellness space when it comes to organ meats and that is “like supports like”. Beef LIVER supports our LIVER. And you know by now how I feel about supporting the liver. It’s essential for over 500+ functions in the body including detoxification, an essential pillar in hormone balance and skin health. My favorite brand is Perfect Supplements and I have a special discount code for you, DENAE10 which you can stack on their 3-brand 20% off discount to save even more. I would recommend starting off small and working your way up to 4 capsules daily over the course of a few months. And aim to take in the morning or afternoon as it can have an energizing effect on the body and you may not want that at 6 pm at night.

2: Spore-Based Probiotics

Probiotics are extremely popular and again, there are so many to choose from. Though the options are many, spore-based are going to be your best bet due to their high survivability. We want to make sure it’s able to survive the intense conditions of the stomach and make it to the intestines to offer the most support. I would recommend probiotics if you have been struggling with lower abdominal bloating, excessive gas, have taken antibiotics for any period of time, have bad breath or strong body odors or are experiencing frequent diarrhea or constipation. Our gut microbiome is easily impacted by opportunistic (bad) bacteria and reintroducing the good guys helps to encourage optimal gut function and balance. My go-to brand is Just Thrive Health, and you can use the code DENAE15 at checkout.

3: Whole-Food Based Vitamin C

Staying with the theme of bio-available nutrients, next up is vitamin C. This one is very popular right now because of the weather changes and immune systems struggling to keep up. But I would challenge you to opt for a whole food based vitamin C supplement. Vitamin C is necessary for progesterone production, protects cells from free radical damage, support immune function, supports skin health and more. In the Heaton home, we have been really enjoying the Synergy Brand, but Perfect Supplements also has a great option as well if you wanted to stack those discounts.

4: Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium is one that I recommend to pretty much every one of my clients simply because it is so quickly depleted in times of stress. And we all are bombarded with stress on a daily basis. Even if you think you have the most chill, stress-free lifestyle, your body is still being impacted by toxins and environmental factors, food triggers, dehydration, poor sleep, blood sugar imbalances and more. Magnesium is responsible for muscular contraction and relaxation (meaning it can ease menstrual cramps!), protein synthesis, prevention of kidney stones, structural integrity of teeth and bones, regulating sugar metabolism and energy production, and is considered to be the “heart mineral”. I’m sure you have seen all the different types of magnesium on the market, and have been confused by which one to get. In my experience and research, I have found that two types in particular are most easily utilized by the body. And that is the goal because we don’t want the body to have to work harder to simply use magnesium. Magnesium glycinate and bicarbonate are my two suggestions. I have been steering more towards glycinate though for cost purposes and it doesn’t affect stomach acid like bicarbonate does.

Supplementation can be very confusing and often it’s best to work with a practitioner who can help guide you by taking a closer look at your current needs and goals. If you are looking to balance your hormones and alleviate cycle related symptoms, digestive issues or hoping to get to the root of your acne, I would love to help you get there. Till next time,

Denae
